Teaneck Creek Conservancy

The Teaneck Creek Conservancy is a small green space, probably an acre or two in area. Here is the link to the official site.  It describes how activists worked hard to reclaim a space that had been used as dumping ground for almost a century. There are trails, some art based on the reuse of construction materials, and a small labyrinth (shaped like a turtle) made of rocks embedded in the ground (maybe 30 feet wide). It is overgrown and has not been cared for in a while.

If you live in the area, I recommend stopping by for a short walk. The site has a nice visual tour. Short of going there, that is a good way to get a sense of the place.

However, before you do, I'd like you to take a look at a photo I took.

Think for a second.

What has happened here that made them put up this warning?

Is that just a pile of sticks over there,  or is it something else?

Is that just an animal scurrying through the underbrush?

Are there other people on the same path as you are?

Did they read the sign?

Was the sign directed at them?

  1. What a fabulous sign! I'm telling you, now when I go to parks I am going to be on the look out for signs like this. Who knows, maybe New Jersey is a hot bed for ritual sacrifices.....

  2. This place sounds intriguing... how big is the labyrinth?

  3. The labyrinth is tiny. I don't think it is more than 30 feet across, and it is flat, so if you didn't know the look for it you could walk right over the space without noticing. However, you do have to go through a gate to get there, so you know you about to see it. It is supposed to help with mediation and related mindful states, I assume, but my kids ran around skipping from stone to stone.

  4. Hmmm.... an outdoor mediation space in NJ? That sounds great... the thought of a meditation space posting the sign of "no ritual sacrifices" builds quite the unusual story of this space.
